Japan, under its Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGHSP) scheme, has made available a grant of US$105,932, to the Adansi North District Assembly.
The grant will be used for the construction of three 10-unit water closet toilet facilities in three towns, Fomena, Dompoase and Fumso, under the Project for Construction of Public Toilets at Adansi North District.
It is expected that over 16,000 inhabitants will benefit from these projects, which will improve sanitary and general health conditions.
At the signing of the agreement in Accra, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, Mr. Naoto Nikai, said, health is one of the prime areas for the Japanese government in helping developing countries in Africa; and realising the need to increase the level of sanitation in the district in order to cater for the growing population, the scheme is very convenient because the people of Adansi North are going to benefit from it directly.
“The Adansi North District Assembly is aiming at improving the health needs of its people through the provision of potable water and proper sanitation. Due to the growth of the population, sanitation facilities in the Adansi North District have become insufficient to serve the over 92,500 people in the district.
“It is for this very reason that the District Assembly sought assistance from the Government of Japan through the GGHSP scheme,” he said.
The Ambassador mentioned that his government recently provided about US $100m worth of grants for the ‘Project for Rehabilitation of National Trunk Roads,’ covering a distance of 60kilometres, from Bekwai in the Ashanti Region to Assin Praso of the Central Region, through to Fomena in the Adansi North District.
He commented that even though the Japanese government is in the process of rebuilding Fukushima after the March, 2011 earthquake that claimed lives and property running into billions of dollars, the government has not cut down on the level of assistance to countries that need their help for projects such as this.
The District Chief Executive (DCE) of the beneficiary communities, Abdul Lateef Majdoub, expressed gratitude on behalf of the people of Adansi North and pledged that the grant would be put to its proposed use for the enhancement of sanitation in the district.
“I therefore want to take this opportunity to register on behalf of the chiefs and people of Adansi North our deepest appreciation and gratitude to GGHSP for this landmark support to address the sanitation needs of the people, and we will ensure that the projects are well supervised to ensure value for money,” he said.
